Beer Glaze - Flat beer and pigment make a slow drying glaze good for wood graining

Capital - This decorative cap of any column is called this

Casein - Casein is a sophisticated version of milk paint as casein is made from milk. Paint dries to a matte finish.

Castello - This is the name of a small Italian castle

Classic Gesso - Made from rabbit skin glue, water and whitening, it is used as a liquid coating for wood. It dries hard but is absorbent

Color Waxing - Mixing a clear wax with pigment

Craquelur - A crackle effect on paint, varnish, leather or china

Dado rail - A piece of molding fixed  onto a wall, also known as chair rail

Distemper Paint - Made from animal glue, pigment and whitening, it is a soft paint that can be washed off

Eggshell paint - Low sheen paint

Faux bois  - Faux wood (heart, burl and straight grain wood including mahogany, sycamore, bird's eye maple and more)

Faux marbre - Faux marble (breche, brocatelle, veined and cloudy marbles)

Flat paint - Paint that is totally sheen-free

Fresco - Wet plaster on a wall with pigment applied. Three layers of plaster are needed for a fresco

Frieze - A horizontal decorative border

Georgian - Style of architecture

Gilding - Gold leafing usually applied to wood, plaster, or metal

Glazing - Also known as scumble, complies of tint and clear glaze

Graining - The painting, glazing or printing an object to make it look like wood

Gum Arabic - Used in watercolor paint to paint on paper. It is high in plasticity and does not crack

Italialnate - Architecture inspired by using classical Italian design

Lime Wash - Also, known as whitewash when dry.  Lime mixed with water or small amounts of glue creates a paint like substance, used on stone, brick or plaster 

Lincrusta - Heavily embossed wallpaper, used below chair rails or on ceilings

Metallic Paint - Instead of adding pigment to a binder, metallic powders, also known as bronze powder, are added

Milk Paint - Made from milk, curds and pigment, it is a simple paint but not as durable as casein. In early times it was used as house paint. It has no smell and does not go moldy

Oil Paint - Pigment plus linseed oil and driers

Palazzo - An Italian palace

Pearl Paint - Instead of adding pigment to a binder, add mica powder

Plinth - The rectangular block that forms the base of a column or statue

Satin paint - Low sheen

Semi-gloss paint - High sheen

Scumble - Also, known as glaze

Shellac Lacquer - Shellac is a product that comes from the Indian iac insect. It creates a waxy resin. Shellac is alcohol based when mixed and dries very quickly. Sometimes referred to as French polish

Stucco - A weather resistant mixture of dehydrated lime, glue and powdered marble, used on the exterior of buildings

Textured Paint - Paint that has sand added ranging from fine to coarse

Tooling - Any kind of decorative work done with a tool

Trompe l'oeil - A flat surface with painted decoration intended to fool the eye and give the illusion of reality in dimension
